THE HOSTS

A woman sitting on a rug in a living room, smiling at the camera, with a wood stove, a coffee table, and large windows in the background, black and white photo.

Joannah Harbeck | Creative Director

Black and white portrait of a smiling young woman with wavy shoulder-length hair, wearing a dark dress with puffed sleeves and a ruffled neckline.

The Design Field was born from a shared vision between Caity Smithson of Mae Proper Interiors (Iron Mountain, MI) and Joannah Harbeck of Sunday Morning Interiors (Monterey Peninsula, CA). What began as conversations about the gaps in traditional design conferences soon evolved into a clear idea to create something more intimate, restorative, and designed to truly serve the well-being of interior designers.

Together, they imagined a retreat that feels immersive and holistic, where wellness is as central as business strategy, and where designers can step away from the digital hustle and back into an analog world of hands-on learning, exclusive showroom tours, or “adult field trips”, and meaningful connections. With their blend of masterful strategy and soulful intention (classic Capricorns), Caity and Joannah have shaped an experience designers crave: a beautiful sanctuary to elevate their craft, grow their business, and return home renewed, clear, and deeply connected long after Charleston.

Caity Smithson | Event Director

“We created The Design Field as the retreat we wished existed. One that is immersive, wellness-driven, and a true sanctuary for designers to reconnect with their craft, rebalance their daily rhythm, and regain their sense of community.”

  • Speaker Testimonial

"I love connecting with like minded creative professionals, and often feel that this industry can be difficult to truly network and share meaningful information. My mission is to provide honest insight about Yond, my personal experiences with developing a creative business and how those insights inspire or invigorate another designer. Our worlds are so busy and it is hard to find the time to really dig into your creative craft, so the Design Field Retreat was such an exciting prospect to be a part of!”

    — Julia Miller of Yond Interiors

  • Speaker Testimonial

"The blend of business and personal elements are what drew me to this retreat. Especially in a service-based business, it’s all an extension of us. To take care of our clients well, we have to do the same for ourselves."

    — Ali Faulkner of AEF Interiors

  • Speaker Testimonial

"I am so excited about this retreat! Community is everything to me, both personally and professionally. My business wouldn’t exist without the designers and industry friends who’ve shared advice, ideas, and support along the way. I love any opportunity that brings us together to pull back the curtain and have real conversations about what it’s actually like to build and run a successful design firm. And I was blown away by how elevated, intentional, and beautifully curated The Design Field retreat was."
